The UTeach Institute is pleased to announce a second cohort of universities replicating UTeach. Eight new universities will join the first cohort of 13 implementing UTeach across 11 states nationwide.A second cohort of eight universities has received funds to replicate UTeach, further contributing to the growing national community working to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teacher preparation nationwide.
Two new universities in Texas – University of Texas at Arlington and University of Texas at Tyler – received funds from the Texas Education Agency, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the National Math and Science Initiative, and Texas Instruments Foundation. Four universities in Tennessee – Middle Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and University of Memphis – received federal and state funds from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Tennessee Department of Education. Cleveland State University and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs also received funds to implement UTeach, from the National Science Foundation and a private donor, respectively. Grants of $1.4 million support program implementation at one university over a five-year period.
These universities will begin offering the first course in the UTeach sequence, Step 1, in the fall. In addition to the original UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin, 21 universities across 11 states are now implementing UTeach. By 2017, about 3,300 secondary STEM teachers will have graduated from these programs, impacting more than 20 million students during the course of their careers. More than 1,000 STEM teachers are expected to graduate from UTeach replication programs annually.
