VolsTeach Noyce Scholar Participated in Shodor Institute’s Professional Development in Ireland

March 7, 2012

University of Tennessee, Knoxville, student, Joel Smith, is the second Noyce Scholar from a UTeach-based program to participate in the Shodor Institute's and NCSI's professional development opportunity in Ireland.

Joel Smith, a VolsTeach Noyce Scholar at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was selected as one of four students from across the country to participate in the Shodor Institute’s professional development program on computational thinking and inquiry-based teaching methods for science educators. Shodor, in partnership with the National Computational Science Institute (NCSI), and funded by the National Science Foundation, offered an international training opportunity for pre- and in-service teachers at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland, from February 16-22, 2012. Joel relates that the experience gave him a “greater understanding of inquiry-based instruction through the use of modeling.”

Readers may recall that one of the other three students selected from across the country was Lisa Berrry, a UTeaChattanooga student at The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.

Congratulations, Joel and Lisa!
