UTeach Program Results
UTeach at UT Austin
About 600 students are enrolled in the UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). 27% represent two key minority populations—Hispanic and African American—that traditionally have been underrepresented in science, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. About 100 UTeach students per semester receive internships, scholarships, or fellowships funded by the program.
In operation since 1997, UTeach has graduated about 675 students and currently graduates about 75 per year. Although all UTeach alumni earn rigorous science, mathematics, or computer science degrees that make them competitive candidates for graduate or professional school, 88% choose to enter the teaching profession, and about half teach in low-income schools. More than five years after they graduate, about 80% are still teaching. UTeach alumni have taught an estimated 350,000 secondary STEM students.
In order to support field experiences throughout the course sequence for such a large program, 9 award-winning master teachers are employed full-time as clinical faculty to work with UTeach students at UT Austin. The program also partners with about 300 mentor teachers in local school districts to provide field experiences for students.
National UTeach Replication
In Fall 2008, 13 universities across the U.S. began implementing UTeach programs as part of the first cohort of UTeach replication. UTeach graduates of these universities are expected to teach more than 3.5 million secondary science and mathematics students by 2019.
Now in our fourth round of UTeach replication, the UTeach Institute partners with 29 universities, including UT Austin, to implement UTeach programs across 14 states. Excluding the original program at UT Austin, UTeach enrollment has risen from 519 students in Fall 2008 to almost 5,000 in Fall 2011.
As a 100kin10 partner, the UTeach Institute has committed to working with 50 universities to implement UTeach programs that enroll 10,000 students by 2017. To this end, we continue to solicit strategic partnerships to support competitive RFP opportunities for UTeach replication. As the national community expands, UTeach has great potential to address a number of issues related to the reform of STEM education.
